Blackberry messenger to be released for iOS and Android platforms

Research In Motion are planning to release a cross platform version of BlackBerry Messenger for Apple iOS and Google Android platforms. RIM are aiming to get the software out on Android first, followed up shortly afterwards with a release on iOS. We hear rumours that they aren't yet sure whether to charge for the software or offer it as a freebie.

As Blackberry users will already know, the BBM service is a part of the OS itself and recently V 6.0 was leaked onto the net. From what we hear BBM 6.0 should be released with the BlackBerry OS 6.1 Evolution update which is expected to arrive sometime in the second half of 2011. If Rim are planning to release BBM for Android and iOS then it would make sense to announce it with the BB OS 6.1 update.

KitGuru says: Whether people on other software platforms will really want the BBM package remains to be seen, it is already facing stiff competition from other clients such as Kik messenger.
