Bugsnax became a bit of a viral hit ahead of its launch in 2020 due to the game’s weird concept and incredibly catchy theme song. 4 years on from its release, the team at Young Horses have brought the game back in a surprising way – releasing a free virtual reality update for PC.
Making the announcement on Steam, the team at Young Horses officially unveiled the free VR update (which has been in beta for a while), saying “To celebrate 4 years since Bugsnax’s launch, we’re releasing VR on SteamVR for Windows as a free update for all of you.”
Adding further context, the team continued, “What began as a fun side project by one of our programmers has evolved into a free update for Bugsnax fans! Converting the game from flatscreen to VR felt like a natural fit, especially with the hands-on use of tools and traps that make catching Bugsnax so engaging. Plus, you can now compare your height with all the Grumpus characters. Hint: they’re taller than you think!”
Interestingly, despite being a PlayStation 5 exclusive at launch, the game's VR update will seemingly be a PCVR-only experience, with the team stating “There are currently no plans for other platforms, including PSVR2, Meta Quest standalone, or Apple Vision Pro. Bugsnax was created using a custom game engine, making full porting time-consuming. We intend to update the Windows version of Bugsnax on Epic Games Store to include SteamVR support.”
As mentioned by the team themselves, the concept of Bugsnax would work really well in a virtual reality experience, owing to its focus on exploration and creature capturing – and so this update is highly welcome.
Hopefully the addition proves to be successful enough to warrant a PSVR2 update at some point in the future. Bugsnax is currently 60% off.
