Sony CFO says the company needs more ‘original IP’

Thanks to Sony's decades in the entertainment industry, the company has access to a lot of IP, but only a percentage of it is original content, produced and conceived in house. Now, Sony's heads in Japan are looking to change that with a push for more original IP.

Speaking with the Financial Times in a recent interview, Sony CFO, Hiroki Totoki, said the company needs to foster more IP from the ground up, across all of its entertainment divisions, not just in gaming.

Here is the full quote: “Whether it’s for games, films or anime, we don’t have that much IP that we fostered from the beginning. We’re lacking the early phase and that’s an issue for us.”

While Sony might be failing in the eyes of its leaders at building up new, original IP, Totoki does say that Sony has been “better at finding a global audience for content that has already become popular” in certain territories.

This statement comes at a funny time, as PlayStation Studios just tried to launch a new IP, Concord, but sales of the game were so bad that it is being taken offline this week.

KitGuru Says: There is a lot of risk involved with starting up new IP, as there is no guarantee that it will take off. However, given the remaster/remake craze we've seen through all mediums of entertainment in the past decade, I think we can all agree that we do need more new, original ideas to keep things interesting.
