Mafia: The Old Country explores the origins of the Italian mob

In the lead-up to Gamescom, there were rumours that a new Mafia game would be announced. At the time, we assumed this would be Mafia 4, but we are actually getting something quite different – Mafia: The Old Country.

Mafia: The Old Country is a prequel, set years before the events of the first game. This is essentially an origin story, exploring the earliest days of organised crime mobs in Italy.

While the announcement trailer is very short, it is accompanied by a written description that teases the game a bit further:

“Uncover the origins of organized crime in Mafia: The Old Country, a gritty mob story set in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily. Fight to survive in this dangerous and unforgiving era, with action brought to life by the authentic realism and rich storytelling that the critically acclaimed Mafia series is known for.”

Mafia: The Old Country will return in December 2024, likely as part of The Game Awards, for a ‘closer look'. Developed with Unreal Engine 5, the game is currently planned to be released in 2025.

KitGuru Says: While I didn't enjoy Mafia 3 much, I am very excited to see a new game in the series with a fresh setting. Are you looking forward to this prequel, or are you holding off for a true Mafia 4?

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
