FBC: Firebreak gets final major update less than a year after release

FBC: Firebreak was the latest project from Remedy Entertainment – the team behind beloved titles including but not limited to Alan Wake, Max Payne and Control. Set in the same universe as Control, this co-op live-service FPS failed to resonate with many, despite launching day-one onto multiple subscription services. With the ship seemingly not turning around any time soon, Remedy have now confirmed that the game’s latest major update will be its last.

Taking to their Steam page to make the announcement, the team at Remedy Entertainment unveiled the ‘Open House’ update for FBC: Firebreak. Available right now, this latest content drop is rather meaty, and includes:

• New Friend’s Pass (up to 2 friends can play for free with you)
• 5 new ‘Endless Shift’ arenas “inspired by locations from the original Control”
• Gameplay enhancements
  • ‘Harmful condition’ improvements
  • Healing improvements
• Streamlined / overhauled perk system
• Weapon balance improvements
• Quality-of-life features
  • Increased crawl speed
  • Faster revives

While a pretty significant update, it is unfortunately its last, with Remedy confirming that “Open House will be the last Major update for FBC: Firebreak. We won't be adding new playable content after this update.”

Fortunately, unlike most other live-service titles, servers are not being taken down anytime soon, with the team affirming the fact that “FBC: Firebreak will stay online and continue to be playable for years to come. We have done engineering work to ensure we can sustain the upkeep of the relay servers when the player volume is lower.”

Pretty much since its release in June of last year, Remedy have admitted that FBC: Firebreak had failed to capture a large audience. So, while it is unfortunate (yet unsurprising) to see support for the game ceasing, it is encouraging at least to see the title ending on a somewhat high note. Hopefully the game manages to find a dedicated playerbase who can enjoy FBC “for years to come.”
