Intel has recently unveiled new details about its upcoming Lunar Lake CPU architecture. Set to rival Qualcomm's next-generation Snapdragon X Series, the Lunar Lake processor is designed for “Next Gen AI PCs” and is expected to hit the market in Q3 2024.
In addition to the Lunar Lake announcement, Intel has announced that Arrow Lake, part of the Core Ultra 200 series targeted at mobile and desktop platforms, will be available in Q4 2024. Reports suggest that more information about Arrow Lake will be revealed during Computex.
Intel's Lunar Lake marketing presentation coincides with Qualcomm's release of new details on the Snapdragon X Series and Microsoft's new Copilot+ PCs for AI. Intel's marketing materials directly compare their CPUs and Qualcomm's, highlighting significant performance enhancements. According to Intel, Lunar Lake is projected to deliver 1.4x better AI performance in Stable Diffusion 1.5 compared to the Snapdragon X Elite, a 1.5x graphics improvement over Meteor Lake, and faster core performance than both the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U and the Snapdragon X Elite.
Intel has confirmed that Lunar Lake will feature new core architectures: Lion Cove (P-Core) and Skymont (E-Core). The chip will include an “Advanced Low Power Island” and a new NPU unit capable of +45 TOPS. Adding the Xe2 GPU claimed +60 TOPS of AI performance, we get Intel's result of up to +100 TOPS for Lunar Lake chips.
The Intel Core Ultra 200V series is designed to power lightweight laptops, Mini-PCs, and potentially gaming handhelds. On the other hand, the more powerful Arrow Lake series, which features the same CPU core architectures but an older Xe-LPG (Alchemist) GPU architecture, will be employed in high-end laptops and desktops.
