System Shock Remake getting massive update ahead of console release

After a lengthy development, Nightdive Studios’ System Shock Remake finally released on PC in May of last year, faithfully recreating the 1994 immersive sim classic. Ahead of the remake’s console release, Nightdive Studios have revealed a massive patch is set to drop, overhauling many mechanics.

In an interview conducted by PC Gamer, Nightdive’s CEO and founder Stephen Kick discussed many of the changes coming about ahead of System Shock’s console release. One of the biggest changes arriving with the 11th of April patch is the ability to play as a male or female hacker, with Kick claiming that:

“[Hacker gender choice] was a stretch goal for Kickstarter oh, seven, eight years in the making. We knew we wanted to patch that in, it was just one of those things that we knew wouldn't have any kind of immediate effect on gameplay, but just having that option kind of adds to the immersive quality of the game.”

Beyond this, the update will also completely rework the game’s ending. Described as an “upgrade” this change is coming about as a result of the fact that “A lot of the criticism that we received was: you spent this whole game collecting items, gearing yourself up for this big battle, and then all of your stuff was gone. You're left with just this one weapon to play what boils down to a minigame. It's just been completely reworked.”

Finally, the update will also introduce ‘Mutant Combat Enhancements’ including an ‘easy mode waypoint system’ which should help prevent some players from getting entirely lost.

System Shock’s Remake was already well-received upon its initial launch. It’s exciting to see the team at Nightdive continuing to refine it further.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
