Private Division and Wētā Workshop have a new Lord of the Rings game on the way

Private Division has announced Tales of the Shire, a new “The Lord of the Rings” game currently in development by Wētā Workshop. Alongside the announcement, the publisher, Private Division, has launched a teaser trailer.

Wētā Workshop, well-known for creating special effects and props for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies, among many other movies, will be the primary developer. The game's publishing will be handled by Private Division, Take Two Interactive's independent spinoff publisher.

The initial clip has no gameplay footage. In a live-action segment, a figure adds a picture to a journal, which is then shown to feature many other images of the Hobbits' daily lives and various Shire locations and buildings. According to the publisher, the game will be a “heart-warming, new The Lord of the Rings game” where you'll experience “a cosy Hobbit life”.

Based on the brief pieces of information we have about the upcoming Lord of the Rings games, we suspect it will be a farming/life simulator title similar to Stardew Valley. Considering the game is coming to consoles and PCs in 2024, we should learn more about the game soon.
