ESA finally throws in the towel and cancels E3 for good

We haven't had an E3 event for several years at this point, although the ESA has made several attempts to bring it back since the pandemic. Unfortunately, none of those attempts were successful and most of the industry has moved on, so E3 is now officially scrapped for good. 

Today, the ESA finally confirmed what we've seen coming for quite some time. After two decades, E3 is officially cancelled and the event won't be returning, likely ever.

While E3 started off as an industry-only event, meaning it was closed off to the public, prior to its cancellation, the ESA did open E3 up to the public for its last few iterations. However, with companies like Sony and Nintendo veering towards their own events, E3 lost a lot of its pull.

In recent years, Gamescom has started hosting its own showcase, and Geoff Keighley has launched the Summer Games Fest and expanded The Game Awards to accommodate even more announcements. With all of that in mind, it would seem that E3 simply got squeezed out of its spot as the staple annual gaming event.
