Sony’s PlayStation earbuds to feature noise cancelling and Bluetooth support

Back in May of this year Sony announced a number of surprise accessories set to be coming to the PS5 later in 2023. While the company’s Project Q handheld drew the greatest amount of attention, the console manufacturer also unveiled their first pair of wireless gaming earbuds. Thanks to an FCC filing by the company, we now have more details on what to expect from the upcoming accessory.

As discovered by the electronics-focused publication MySmartPrice, a new filing by Sony to the FCC revealed a bunch of details surrounding the as-of-yet-unnamed earbuds. According to the filing, these earbuds will come packed with active noise cancelling for increased immersion. Additionally, the buds will utilise a USB transceiver for its audio in order to minimise latency when playing games.

Interestingly, despite this, the earbuds will also seemingly offer Bluetooth support – more specifically Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) meaning it will at the very least be using Bluetooth 4.0. Due to the lack of any Bluetooth audio support on the PS5, it would appear as though this functionality is being included for those who wish to connect the earbuds to other devices such as one’s smartphone or any other Bluetooth enabled tech.

Using Bluetooth audio when gaming comes with many disadvantages, most notably due to the increased latency when compared to other forms of wireless connectivity. That said, the added functionality is welcome as it will make for a much more flexible experience. Hopefully we hear more official details sooner rather than later.
