Older Call of Duty games might be coming to Game Pass soon

With the Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard seemingly finally set to go through fully, the Xbox console manufacturer appears to be preparing to bring the publisher’s back catalogue of titles to Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription service – starting with Call of Duty.

As reported by Twitter page ‘Game Pass Tracker’ Brazilian users have discovered that in going to Call of Duty Black Ops 2’s page and trying to purchase the title, they have been met with the message “Receive this item for FREE with your gaming subscription! (Game Pass) Checkout and it's yours FOREVER!”

Presumably the Brazilian store jumped the gun a little bit on the announcement – especially with the Activision Blizzard acquisition set to close within the next few weeks. That said, it is worth noting that the Brazilian Xbox branch in particular has had an inconsistent track record when it comes to leaks such as these.

Should this leak end up being true, more modern COD titles are unlikely to find their way onto Game Pass any time soon due to restrictions imposed by PlayStation as part of the console manufacturer’s long-standing relationship with the Call of Duty brand.

Even without any modern COD titles however, bringing the first-person shooter to Game Pass in any form would be massive for the service. We will have to wait and see whether this ends up being the case.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
