Gamescom 2021: Massive State of Decay 2 update announced

State of Decay 2 is the latest game from development studio Undead Labs. Released in 2018, the game’s studio was later confirmed to have been acquired by Microsoft. While the team works on the game’s sequel, State of Decay 2 continues to be updated, bringing new content to its now confirmed 10 million players.

Making the announcement during Xbox’s Gamescom showcase, a free update to State of Decay 2 was announced. Titled State of Decay 2: Homecoming, the free update will bring with it a huge amount of new content, including the entire map from the first game ‘Trumbull Valley’ as a “fully remastered, open-world playable map.”

There will be new content brought to the map as well, as “players will learn about the latest developments in this area, discovering new characters and storylines and resolving long-running plot threads,” alongside “six new bases, as well as unique weapons and outfits that can only be found in Trumbull Valley.”

Since its release in 2018, State of Decay 2 seems to have amassed a dedicated audience, as the team also confirmed that “State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition has surpassed 10 million players since its launch, a major milestone reflecting the success and popularity of the ultimate survival-sim game.”

Of course, it is worth noting that the game is available on Game Pass, meaning that these figures are not reflective of copies sold. Still, State of Decay 2 is in a great place, leading into the upcoming release of its sequel some time in the future.
