Horizon Forbidden West officially sold over 8.4 million copies

Horizon Zero Dawn proved to be a huge success for PlayStation, with the 2017 open-world title helping push the team at Guerrilla Games to new heights – both in terms of their ambitions, as well as the team’s commercial/critical success. Just one year after its launch, 2022’s Horizon Forbidden West has now officially sold over 8.4 million copies.

Taking to the PlayStation Blog, ‘Jan-Bart van Beek’ the Studio Director and Studio Art & Animation Director at Guerrilla reflected on the past 20 years of Guerrilla Games, discussing the team’s eventual shift from Killzone to Horizon.

Speaking of Horizon, Jan-Bart van Beek offered updated sales figures for both entries in the series, saying “As of April 16, 2023, the Horizon franchise has sold through more than 32.7 million units worldwide, of which Horizon Forbidden West has sold through over 8.4 million units. Millions more around the world have discovered Horizon thanks to PlayStation's subscription services and initiatives, including PlayStation Plus, and Play at Home. All told, it's a milestone we never imagined possible twenty years ago when we first started making games.”

With the figures shared, it can be gleaned that the first Horizon game has sold just shy of 25 million units. Of course, Zero Dawn was released all the way back in 2017, and later was brought over to PC meaning the game has had more opportunities to sell as many copies as it has. Still, 8.4 million copies is nothing to sniff at, especially with the game being exclusive to PlayStation consoles.

While not quite Nintendo figures, it seems as though many of Sony’s first-party games are seeing an increase in sales, with many of the titles quite rapidly surpassing 10 million copies. It will be interesting to see how many units of Forbidden West are sold by the time the sequel is released.
