Intel Core i9-13980HX mobile CPU could be almost as fast the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X

High-end mobile processors are usually quite fast, sometimes even on par with some desktop chips. However, it's not every day we see a flagship mobile processor standing on par with the rival's top desktop CPU of the same generation. That could be the case with the Intel Core i9-13980HX, which can score almost as high as the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X on Geekbench.

The Geekbench entry shared by REHWK shows an MSI Raider GE78HX laptop with an Intel Core i9-13980HX and 32GB of memory. In the single-core benchmark, the system scored 2,097 points. As for the multi-core test, it got 22,062 points. These aren't the first scores posted online of the upcoming Intel flagship mobile processor, but it's the highest multi-core score we've seen so far. The highest single-core score we've found was 2,139 points scored on an Asus ROG Strix G18 (via Benchleaks).

If we compare the top single- and multi-core scores achieved by laptops equipped with the Core i9-13980HX mobile CPU, you'll see it almost performs the same as AMD's flagship desktop chip, the Ryzen 9 7950X. The single-core score of the AMD chip is just 2.5% higher than what the Intel mobile CPU achieved. In the multi-core benchmark, the difference increases to 4%.

We should note that despite its impressive score, Geekbench 5 is a relatively short benchmark, allowing the CPU to run at its full potential during its entirety. For longer periods, it should be hard for a laptop's cooling system to tame the Core i9-13980HX at full load.

KitGuru says: The Intel Core i9-13980HX is shaping up to be quite the CPU, but expect it to be exclusive for a small set of high-end laptops. Moreover, if you're planning to get a laptop with this CPU, you should pay special attention to its cooling system as Raptor Lake chips can get quite hot.
