The Coalition is officially working on the next Gears of War

Just a few weeks ago, sources claimed that The Coalition had scrapped plans for a new IP and was pivoting its focus towards the next Gears of War game. Now, it seems those rumours have been proven true, as the studio has begun recruiting for Gears 6.

It was reported back in 2021 that The Coalition has begun work on multiple projects not related to the studio's main IP, Gears of War. At least one of these projects was a brand new IP, being developed as part of the studio's effort to get up to speed with Unreal Engine 5. As part of a round of lay-offs at Microsoft earlier this year, some employees at various studios were let go and a number of projects were cancelled, including at least one unannounced game at The Coalition.

Now, the studio is turning its attention to Gears 6, as shown by new job listings. Currently, The Coalition is hiring for a Senior Gameplay Designer, specifically for the Gears of War franchise. While the job listing doesn't explicitly say Gears 6, it does say that the successful applicant will “forge the future of the IP”.

Currently, there is no word on when Gears 6 will be announced, nor when it will be released. The Coalition has spent the last couple of years building up its knowledge base with Unreal Engine 5 and learning how to get the most out of the engine. Now, it seems initial work on Gears 6 is beginning, so it is likely still three to five years away from release.

KitGuru Says: Gears of War will return, but it is likely going to be a while. In the meantime, perhaps we'll finally get that long-rumoured Marcus Fenix collection for Xbox and PC, which would finally bring the full original trilogy over to the PC platform for the first time.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
