Intel releases XeSS plugin for Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5

Upscaling technologies like Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR have really caught on with game developers, in part thanks to ease of implementation through plugins for popular game engines. Developers working with Unreal Engine will soon be able to quickly implement Intel XeSS too, as a plugin is now rolling out for Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5.

As spotted by TechPowerUp, Intel made the Intel XeSS plugin public on GitHub. The plugin is currently available for Unreal Engine 4, 4.26 and 5.0, meaning developers working on projects on these versions of the engine will have quick and easy access. However, the project must be based on the DirectX 12 API. In addition, the technology won't work in stereo VR and split screen modes.

Unlike FSR, Intel XeSS isn't open-source, so don't expect to see any mods forcefully enabling the technology in games. Hopefully, that won't be needed, as implementing the upscaling tech through the Unreal engine is now easier than before, meaning we're likely to see more games using it.

The launch of the Intel XeSS plugin comes months after Intel officially launched the technology. Since then, many new games have been announced to feature the technology, but that list will undoubtedly increase now that the plugin is available.

While its sequel has failed to make the same level of splash, the team are apparently working on a brand new game – this one being inspired by Titanfall.
