MWII breaks Call of Duty record with $1 Billion in 10 days

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II seems to be breaking franchise records left, right and centre, with us having previously reported that the first-person shooter not only managed to achieve the biggest launch in PlayStation Store history, but also in the history of the franchise itself too. Now, MWII has broken another record, crossing $1 Billion in just 10 days.

Making the announcement via a press release, Activision announced that “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II continues to smash franchise records as the new blockbuster has crossed $1 billion in worldwide sell-through following the first 10 days from its release on October 28, 2022.”

The previous record holder was 2012’s Call of Duty Black Ops II, which managed to make $1 Billion in 15 days. Alongside this new record, Activision shared some early player stats, revealing that within these 10 short days, MWII has already been played for over 200 million hours across 1 billion matches.

Speaking on this success, Johanna Faries, the General Manager for Call of Duty said “The incredible momentum driving Modern Warfare II is a direct reflection of the energy and passion of the Call of Duty community. As we look ahead to an unprecedented level of support for Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0's launch next week, we are motivated to deliver again for the best player community in the world.”

As mentioned, Warzone 2.0 is set to go live on the 16th of November, and with the title being free-to-play, it is safe to say that more records are likely to soon be broken.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
