Xbox Games Studios boss addresses Halo Infinite’s live-service failings

Halo Infinite has had an interesting yet unfortunate life so far. After a year’s delay, the game launched to mostly positive reviews, with both campaign and multiplayer fans alike enjoying Infinite’s combat, mechanics, and launch content. Unfortunately, the team has somewhat dropped the ball since, with a decided lack of post-launch content. The head of Xbox Games Studios has now directly addressed the matter.

As part of the Friends Per Second Podcast – in which he also revealed that Obsidian Entertainment’s Grounded has been played by over 13 million people – Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty discussed the post-launch situation surrounding Halo Infinite as being a “classic runner’s mistake of tripping and stumbling as you come across the finish line.”

According to Booty, the COVID-19 global pandemic played the biggest part in Halo Infinite’s slow content rollout post-launch, with him claiming “Shipping a game is just the beginning. There’s got to be a plan for content,” adding that “The burden is on us.”

Maintaining a live-service title is much harder than one might assume, which explains why so many different games try and fail to do so. It does make sense that a game such as Halo Infinite has hopes to become a thriving live service title, but so far there has been a great deal of talking and not too much action. Hopefully 343i and Xbox manage to turn the Halo Infinite ship around – if nothing else, at least the game is set to look nicer thanks to an upcoming ray-tracing update.
