CD Projekt Red announces The Witcher Remake

CD Projekt Red learned a lot after making the first Witcher game. While that title is looked back on fondly by hardcore fans of the series, it is inaccessible to most due to never getting a console release, not to mention the outdated visuals and gameplay. Fortunately, CD Projekt Red is going back to its roots, announcing a full remake.

The Witcher is getting a remake, CD Projekt Red announced today to commemorate the game's 15th anniversary. In the past, CD Projekt Red did use a development partner to work on a console version, but it was later cancelled due to various issues. Now, the game is getting the full remake it really deserves.

The Witcher Remake is being developed under the codename ‘Canis Majoris', which was part of the roadmap CD Projekt Red unveiled earlier this year, detailing multiple new Witcher and Cyberpunk games.

The game will be rebuilt from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 and all the tools the studio is using to create the new Witcher trilogy of games. Speaking on the remake, CD Projekt Red Studio Head, Adam Badowski said: “The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD PROJEKT RED. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger”.

The original Witcher game was released back in 2007 for the PC. The game features timing-based combat, where you time your mouse clicks at the right point during a sword animation to move on to the next stage of the combo. Missing the window would start your combo up again. In The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red completely reworked the combat system to what we know today, with a quick and heavy attack, a parry function and a dodge roll.

Unfortunately, there is no time frame on when this game may come out, so we could be waiting a while to see it in action.

KitGuru Says: While I don't necessarily love the gameplay in the original Witcher game, I have finished it a few times and I do love the overall story. With this remake, the first Witcher game will be reinvented to fall more in line with modern action games, which should be good news. Better yet, this remake will give a whole new audience of players a chance to experience the game.
