It looks like Age of Empires is heading to Xbox

It has been roughly one year since Age of Empires IV launched on PC, bringing the long-running RTS franchise back out of dormancy. However, the game didn't quite live up to the legendary status of Age of Empires II, a fan-favourite in the series. This week for the series' 25th anniversary event, Microsoft is planning to unveil a console version of Age of Empires II for the first time.

Since bringing the franchise back and releasing ‘Definitive Editions' for the classic games, Microsoft has primarily focused on the PC platform, but never ruled out a console release. According to a PEGI rating listing (via Gematsu), Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is heading to Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles – and the new version of the game might launch today.

Bringing any RTS to console is a tough job given the constraints in place with a controller versus a keyboard and mouse. However, there have been a few good examples of games getting it right over the years. We've yet to see how this game will play with a gamepad, but we won't have to be waiting long.

Later today, there will be an Age of Empires 25th Anniversary livestream, during which the console game is expected to be announced, and possibly immediately released, as the ratings board listing shows a 25th of October release date.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
