Call of Duty Warzone 2.0 will still require MW2 client – but file sizes are much improved

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II is now mere days away from release, and as such, the pre-load for the game has gone live. Unlike previous years, the game’s file size is rather modest. That being said, in order to play Warzone 2.0 you still need MWII installed.

Ahead of its release on the 28th of October, prospective Call of Duty Modern Warfare II players can now pre-download the first-person shooter. While there were fears that the game would follow in the footsteps of previous titles – with regards to their overly inflated file sizes – it seems as though Infinity Ward has managed to keep this year’s COD reasonable in that regard.

Players are able to install Modern Warfare II in chunks, meaning if you only want to play the campaign, or only want to engage in the multiplayer mode, you can do so without needing to install the rest. That being said, no matter what, you will need to install the base game – taking up 34.7GB.

The full breakdown for the game file sizes (on Xbox Series S) is as follows:

  • Base Game – 34.7 GB
  • Campaign – 17.0 GB
  • Co-op – 3.9GB
  • Multiplayer – 8.0 GB
  • Warzone 2 – 5.2 GB

Modern Warfare II seems to be a major improvement when compared to previous years in terms of file sizes, and being able to install each part piecemeal is also welcome. The only negative seems to be the fact that Warzone 2.0 is still tied to the Modern Warfare client. Still Infinity Ward seems to have solved the growing issue of increasing game file sizes – of which they were previously one of the worst offenders. Hopefully they continue to optimise it further.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
