Last night during Apple's streamed product launch event, the company surprised us all with the announcement of the Mac Studio. This super-charged Mac Mini packs the brand new M1 Ultra chip, enabling impressive performance for its form factor.
The M1 Ultra is a new SoC from Apple. As we reported earlier today, the Ultra is essentially two M1 Max chips fused together with an all-new ‘UltraFusion' architecture, enabling the two chips to communicate at speeds of up to 2.5TB per second. The bandwidth between the two processors enables software to recognise the Ultra as one single chip, enabling even faster performance through 20 CPU cores and 64 GPU cores.
As you can see in the image, the Mac Studio has a similar form-factor to the Mac Mini, although it is twice as thick due to the more powerful hardware under the hood. The system is available with either an M1 Max CPU, which is 2.5x faster than the fastest current 27-inch iMac. Alternatively, you can opt for the new M1 Ultra, which promises to be 3.8x faster than the fastest 27-inch iMac. According to Apple, users can also expect similar performance to an RTX 3060 Ti from the GPU component of the M1 Ultra when performing rendering and editing tasks.
To go with the Mac Studio, Apple has also announced the Studio Display, a 27-inch monitor with 5K resolution, a 12MP Ultra Wide camera, six built-in speakers with spatial audio and unlike the Apple Pro Display XDR, a monitor stand is included out of the box.
Mac Studio pricing starts at £1,999 for the base model, meanwhile the Studio Display starts at £1,499.

KitGuru Says: The Mac Studio won't be the only pro-grade system Apple launches this year. The company has also confirmed plans to release a new Mac Pro, so we expect to see plenty more from Apple later this year.
