Aspyr’s KOTOR Remake is reportedly ‘on hold’ and may not reappear for years

It looks like Aspyr's ambitious remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is still many years away. While the original plan was to have the remake finished this year, sources have confirmed that the project is now being rebooted, seemingly after a poor demo showing that led to two team leads losing their jobs.

Aspyr has been working on the KOTOR remake for a while already and last year, it was officially announced as a PS5 console exclusive, with a PC release also planned. According to a report from Bloomberg, this month, Aspyr put the game ‘on pause' and let go of the project's art and design directors. This all followed on from a vertical slice presentation, which was meant to give partners a good look at the overall vision for the game.

This demo was finalised at the end of June and was shown to executives from Lucasfilm and Sony. Internally, developers were apparently feeling good about the vertical slice, but the meeting did not go as well as hoped. Now, Aspyr needs to hire new leads for the project and developers will have to brace for a reset production cycle.

At this point, the game seems to be delayed indefinitely and will not release in the time frame Aspyr was reportedly aiming for. According to those familiar with the project, the game likely won't be ready until 2025 following recent events and there is some concern that parent company, Embracer Group, will hand the project over to Saber Interactive, another studio that Embracer acquired fairly recently.

KitGuru Says: This is very disappointing news and given that it is Schreier reporting this, a lot of these details are likely correct. Perhaps we'll get more on the behind the scenes issues that seem to be taking place at Aspyr.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
