Sony, Nintendo and more are skipping Gamescom this year

2022 has been an interesting year for gaming so far. What was once looking to be one of the most stacked years ever, 2022 has slowly become a more standard year for the industry, with many big titles being pushed back to 2023. Whether due to this or not, a number of publishers have announced they will not be attending this year’s Gamescom, including PlayStation.

In a statement to German site Games Wirtschaft (and reported by Gamesindustry.biz), Sony revealed that the console manufacturer has no plans to attend Gamescom this year. What’s more, they also confirmed that PlayStation won’t be making an appearance at Geoff Keighley’s Gamescom ‘Opening Night Live' showcase.

PlayStation is only the latest in a string of publishers announcing their appearance – or lack thereof – at Gamescom this year. Nintendo, Activision-Blizzard and Take-Two have all previously revealed that they won’t be attending. In fact, so far the only publishers to confirm their presence are Bandai Namco and Embracer Group – though more will undoubtedly be announced in due course.

Still, it seems as though Gamescom’s first year back as a physical event in the wake of COVID-19 will be much smaller in scale compared to previous years – though considering the fact that at its peak, Gamescom has hosted almost 400,000 attendees, it is perhaps for the best that this year remains smaller in scale. Gamescom 2022 will take place from the 24th to the 28th of August 2022.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
