The Walking Dead mobile game seemingly steals Resident Evil art

While the Resident Evil series is one of the biggest zombie franchises in gaming, The Walking Dead has held that crown in the TV sphere. That being said, The Walking Dead has released many video games over the years, however one of the latest releases has seemingly directly and lazily stolen artwork from Resident Evil 2 to promote its own game.

The Walking Dead: Survivors is a free-to-play mobile strategy game first released in April 2021. One Twitter user recently discovered that an Instagram ad from the official video game page showcased two characters from the game.

Surprisingly however, the entirety of the background in which the characters were posed in front of was taken directly from the cover art for Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 Remake. Perhaps even worse is the fact that part of RE2’s Claire Redfield’s hand and gun can still be seen in the image, with the artist for TWD: Survivors seemingly forgetting to photoshop it out.

The mobile gaming market is well known for employing less-than-ethical tactics when it comes to advertising. From ignoring copyright laws to completely mis-representing games, the platform is not foreign to these concepts. Even so, it is surprising to see a property as big as The Walking Dead succumb to such tactics. While possibly an oversight – it is interesting to see nonetheless.
