Gamescom 2021: Blasphemous sequel confirmed for 2023

Blasphemous is a side-scrolling metroidvania which started its life as a Kickstarter project. The game ultimately proved to be successful both commercially and critically upon its release in 2019. Since then, the team at ‘The Game Kitchen’ have been releasing DLC for the game. Ahead of the final piece of DLC, a sequel has been officially announced.

As part of Gamescom 2021, the final DLC for Blasphemous – titled Wounds of Eventide – was shown off, giving fans a look at what will lead to the true ending for the action-platformer metroidvania. Following the release of this free DLC on the 9th of December, the team at ‘The Game Kitchen’ are looking towards the future.

Described as having “despondent imagery” and “riveting atmosphere and world building” Blasphemous attracted users not only for its gameplay and mechanics, but the art style.

Having sold over 1 million copies, the game has warranted a sequel, with the studio saying “We’re so excited to finally announce that we’ve started on a Blasphemous sequel, the community have shown so much love for the first game and we can’t wait to share more when we can!”

Currently, the sequel to Blasphemous is slated to release in 2023 – though with how far away that is, expect the release date to change. Still, it is exciting to see that Blasphemous is getting a sequel. Those who have yet to try the first game will have plenty of time to do so.
