Performance Mode for Microsoft Edge cuts down on CPU and RAM usage

Microsoft's Edge browser picked up a lot of new users when it made the big jump to Chromium and soon, the browser will make some more big improvements. Microsoft is currently testing out a new performance mode for Edge, which aims to improve CPU, RAM and battery usage. 

In a blog post, Microsoft announced ‘Performance Mode' for Edge, which helps optimise “speed, responsiveness, memory, CPU and battery usage”. Turning on performance mode does turn off the sleeping tabs timer function though. As The Verge points out, sleeping tabs timers will be locked to five minutes with performance mode active.

Currently, Performance Mode is in beta testing via the publicly available Edge Canary branch, which is used to test new features. Microsoft does also warn that performance improvements may vary “depending on your individual specifications and browser habits”.

After several weeks of public testing, Microsoft should roll out Performance Mode to all Edge users in another update. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.
