EA has been hacked and source code has been stolen

There have been a number of major cyber attacks on video game companies over the last year, affecting the likes of Capcom, Crytek, Ubisoft and CD Projekt Red. Now, EA has become the latest publisher to suffer a data breach, with hackers obtaining EA game and engine source code. 

As reported by Vice, those responsible for the breach and data theft have been advertising the data on deep web forums, claiming to have source code for games like FIFA 21, as well as internal tools like the Frostbite Engine. In total, 780GB worth of data was stolen during the attack.

In a statement, an EA spokesperson did confirm that there was a data breach recently and that “a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen”. Personal information, such as player data, was not taken, so there is no privacy risk to those who actively play or used to play EA titles.

None of the stolen data has been publicly distributed yet, but that could change if someone buys the data, as we recently saw in CD Projekt Red's case. Currently, EA is working with law enforcement to investigate the breach.
