Sonic Mania is free on the Epic Games Store

2021 represents Sonic the Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary. While the Blue Blur has had a tumultuous life, Sonic Mania served as a love letter to the franchise, offering an excellent platformer for both old and new fans alike. Sonic Mania is now free on the Epic Games Store.

Each week, the Epic Games Store offers a number of titles for free to all those with an Epic Games account. This week, users can get their hands on revivals of old classic 90s games in the form of Sonic Mania and Horizon Chase Turbo.

Horizon Chase Turbo is an arcadey racing game inspired by classic titles from the 80s and 90s, recreating “the classic arcade gameplay with unbound speed limits of fun”. Unlike many of today’s games, Horizon Chase Turbo opts to put arcade gameplay first, with fancy graphics and flashy cars being sacrificed in pursuit of pure gameplay fun.

Sonic Mania is the latest 2D Sonic title, originally created to celebrate the hedgehog’s 25th anniversary. A love letter to the franchise, Sonic Mania is packed with references, call backs and easter eggs to the entire history of Sonic – all the while being a great and fun game in its own right. In lieu of a 30th anniversary title, Sonic Mania serves as an excellent celebration of Sonic’s anniversary.

Both Sonic Mania and Horizon Chase Turbo are available to purchase and download for free from now until the 1st of July.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
