Cross-gen games on PlayStation 5 are now much less confusing

While Microsoft has focused on cross-compatibility for the past few years with its Xbox consoles, Sony has only recently begun to offer a more robust system for cross-generational titles. As such, the system for playing cross-gen games on PS5 has suffered slightly. Thankfully, Sony has now updated its method for dealing with these games, making sure that those with a PS5 actually play the newer-gen version of a game, instead of the last gen backwards compatible version.

In an update on the PS5, as discovered by Twitter user ‘Tidux’, Sony has added a new prompt when playing a game on the console which offers both a PS4 and PS5 version. Previously, confusing UI elements led many players who own cross-gen games to accidentally install and play the PS4 versions of certain games without knowing.

Now, whenever a player is about to play the PS4 version of a game which is also available on PS5, a pop-up box appears, warning the player. The text reads “You’re about to play the PS4 version of this game. Do you want to switch to the PS5 version?”.

Until now, it had been hard to determine whether a player had installed the PS4 or PS5 version of a game. While on Xbox there is a clear badge differentiating current and last-gen titles, no such badge exists on Sony’s console. Though much more can be done to alleviate confusion in this respect on PS5, this is a good first step by Sony.
