Google ends support for Daydream VR

Google's ambitions in the virtual reality space have stalled over the last couple of years and now, it looks like the tech giant is throwing in the towel for the time being. Google's Android-specific VR platform, Daydream, is shutting down. 

In an updated support post this week, Google confirmed that Daydream VR will not be receiving anymore software or security updates. Daydream may also no longer work on newer Android devices running Android 11 or newer.

Anyone that happens to own a compatible Daydream mobile VR headset and a compatible phone will continue to be able to use their apps as they do now. However, the Daydream app could stop working if you update your phone to the latest version of Android.

Third-party apps that used Daydream should still be available as standalone downloads through the Play Store and as long as developers keep supporting those apps individually, they should continue to work.

The VR market has shifted and changed a lot since then, with smartphone-reliant and PC-reliant headsets becoming rarer, while companies focus on building completely standalone VR devices, like the Oculus Quest.
