Ubisoft has reportedly cancelled a Far Cry multiplayer spin-off

For a few years now we've been hearing rumours about multiple new Far Cry projects in development, with one of them being a new take on the extraction shooter genre – a genre that is becoming less popular by the day. Now, it would seem that Ubisoft has caught on to the fact that it has missed the boat on this trend. 

According to a new report from Insider Gaming, Ubisoft has cancelled its Far Cry extraction shooter spin-off. In its place, Ubisoft is now working on a new multiplayer spin-off codenamed “Kodiak”.

It is claimed that this is a “really ambitious” project where “player interactions and player-driven stories take center stage”… which sounds incredibly generic. Ubisoft is also working on the next mainline game in the series, Far Cry 7, reportedly under the codename “Blackbird”.

Ubisoft has greenlit and eventually cancelled many multiplayer projects over the past few years across many different franchises, from The Division and Far Cry, to entirely new IP like XDefiant.

KitGuru Says: A Far Cry extraction shooter could have worked, but it is a much more fitting game mode for something set in The Division universe. I don't understand why The Dark Zone wouldn't just be spun off into its own thing, rather than wasting years of development time trying to force it into another franchise.
