Overwatch is overhauling its Battle Pass, giving more options to players

Overwatch has had an interesting life so far. After proving to be one of the most successful live-service Hero Shooters around, the game would slowly but surely fall out of favour with fans – especially following the controversial launch of Overwatch 2. In the wake of its soft-reboot earlier this year however, the game has gone from strength-to-strength. Trying to capitalise on its renewed popularity, Blizzard have now announced some major changes coming to Overwatch’s Battle Pass.

Making the announcement via their blog post, Blizzard officially unveiled and detailed the next major update coming to Overwatch, with game director Aaron Keller writing: “A revamp to the Battle Pass system has been one of the Overwatch community’s most-requested changes and we have some great news: Battle Pass Revamp will be heading your way when Season 4 launches on August 11!”

The full blog post can be found HERE, and goes into specifics regarding the mentality behind these upcoming changes. That said, the most notable improvements being made include the following:

• You can now choose between 5 different tracks to progress on (instead of linearly going through all 80 tiers
• You can ‘tier hack’ one track’s final reward skin and swap it out (with 12 skins to choose from)
• Progression time remains the same – simply offering greater choice
• Battle Pass visuals are being overhauled for added dopamine hits
• Legacy Battle Passes will be unvaulted (with more details to come in the future)

Overwatch has experimented with different forms of monetisation over the years. Previously going the whole ‘lootboxes’ route, Blizzard would later switch it out for the aforementioned Battle Pass system upon the launch of Overwatch 2. That said, this system has been far from perfect, and so it is welcome to see further refinements coming to its Battle Passes. It will be interesting to see how they choose to bring back prior passes.
