Rocket Lake set to be compatible with 400 and 500-series chipsets

We've been hearing a lot about Z490 and potential forward compatibility with 11th Gen CPUs recently. Now, Intel has released a Linux Graphics Driver Patch and the update log reveals that upcoming Rocket Lake processors will be compatible with 400 and 500-series chipsets.

Some investigation is required to understand how Rocket Lake's support for both 400 and 500-series chipsets was revealed. The first piece of the puzzle can be found in Intel's “Introduce Rocket Lake” Linux graphics driver patch – specifically the line that says “drm/i915/rkl: Add PCH support”. This line might easily be overlooked when reading through the update log, however noted leaker Komachi posted the following on Twitter:

Komachi says that the short yet important line in the update log reveals that Rocket Lake can be paired with either TGP or CMP. The CMP platform is based on the 400-series chipset for Comet Lake processors, while the TGP platform is based on the 500-series chipset for Tiger Lake CPUs. Therefore, for now it seems that Intel's upcoming Rocket Lake processors can be expected to be compatible with the 400 and 500-series chipsets.
