Nintendo not planning any Direct streams right now

Earlier this month, it was reported that Nintendo was not planning a big Direct presentation for June to coincide with when E3 would normally take place. As it turns out, there are no Directs planned at all this year for the time being. 

Japan is currently under lockdown due to COVID-19 and many studios located there are adjusting to remote working. Due to this, Nintendo has scrapped plans for a big Direct, announcing this year's slate of big first-party and third-party releases for the Nintendo Switch.

According to VentureBeat, this current drought will continue for the foreseeable future, as Nintendo “isn't planning a Direct at all for now”. Instead, Nintendo has apparently begun telling third-party publishers to announce their games, rather than waiting for some form of Nintendo event.

Beyond that, Nintendo will apparently continue to surprise-drop trailers for its first-party games, similarly to what it did for Paper Mario: The Origami King, which was announced via a trailer and press release last week.

KitGuru Says: Nintendo Directs are often great to watch, so it is a shame to see them on pause for the time being. Hopefully we'll see them return later in the year, but for now, it looks like announcements will be a bit sporadic.
