Marvel Rivals shrinks game install size by up to 40GB

While most game publishers are still charging ahead with ballooning install sizes, some are actively trying to make things better. Recently, Arrowhead managed to shrink the install size for Helldivers 2 by over 50%. Now, a similar install size reduction is coming to Marvel Rivals.

In a recent developer update video, the Marvel Rivals team confirmed it will implement a new texture compression system with its mid-season game update. With this new system in place, the install size for the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will shrink by around 15GB. PC players will see an even greater space saving, with the game dropping 40GB from its total install size.

The developers say they have managed to do this without sacrificing game detail. Hopefully whatever methods are at work here become more common around the industry, as we desperately need to see game sizes return to sensible numbers during the current era of SSD prices.

In order for this Marvel Rivals update to take effect though, players will need to redownload the full game, but afterwards, you'll have newfound disc space to spare.

KitGuru Says: We're entering a period where hardware prices are climbing too high to make sense for the gaming hobby. Developers can help with this though by refocusing on optimisation efforts and building games that can still play well on lower-power systems.
