New Resident Evil film becomes the highest-rated game adaptation of all time

The Resident Evil series is one of the most acclaimed and well-loved in the video games industry, with a majority of the franchise’s mainline releases being both commercial and critical juggernauts. That said, reception towards its many previous live-action adaptations have been largely mixed at best. Thus, it comes as quite the surprise that their latest attempt at an adaptation – Zach Cregger's Resident Evil – has not only scored high reviews, but is currently sitting as the best-rated video game film adaptation of all time.

With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97% across 85+ professional reviews, the latest live-action Resident Evil film is not only by far the strongest entry in the franchise, but also lands as the highest-rated film adaptation of all time based on a video game.

For context, the top spot was previously held by Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which managed a pretty impressive 86%. Compared to previous Resident Evil films however, this latest release appears to be in a league of its own, with the consensus on the prior 7 being as follows:

  • Resident Evil (2002) – 36%
  • RE: Apocalypse (2004) – 18%
  • RE: Extinction (2007) – 24%
  • RE: Afterlife (2010) – 21%
  • RE: Retribution (2012) – 28%
  • RE: The Final Chapter (2017) – 39%
  • RE: Welcome to Racoon City (2021) – 30%

Resident Evil Adaptation

Described by some as “everything I’ve ever wanted in a ‘RE’ film” while also being “the best job I've seen of translating the experience of playing a video game and making it feel cinematic”, Zach Cregger's adaptation feels like the film equivalent of 2017’s Resident Evil: Biohazard – aka a strong return to form for the franchise.

Of course, we will have to wait and see what fans think of the film when it officially premieres in cinemas tomorrow; but things are looking quite positive.
