Fortnite hits 200 million registered players, with 8.3 million concurrent

Fortnite has experienced rapid growth since its release last year, taking just four months to hit 40 million players and nine months to surpass 125 million players. Epic Games is continuing this upward trajectory, celebrating 200 million players registered to its ultra-popular free-to-play battle royale.

The developer confirmed the milestone to the Wall Street Journal, showing 60 percent growth from reported numbers disclosed in June. Perhaps even more impressive is the concurrent player count, which has almost doubled since February, jumping from 4.3 million to 8.3 million players.

Given that the statement attributes the statistics to “Fortnite” without its Battle Royale subtitle, it’s possible that the figures could include the as-of-yet-unreleased Save the World game mode. Save the World debuted two months earlier than its Battle Royale counterpart for a $40 entry fee, and is expected to launch fully sometime in 2019.

Battle Royale is the real draw, however, already having reached its full release across PC, macOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android platforms. The game currently sits as the most-viewed game on livestreaming platform Twitch, which according to industry tracking site Newzoo, it has held the title since March.

Epic is continuing its storytelling within Battle Royale, as Season 7 looks to usher in a potential festive blanket of snow, provided predictions of the encroaching storm clouds are anything to go by. This has been accompanied with a slew of timed cosmetics, particularly designed for the winter.

KitGuru Says: It looks like there’s no slowing down for Epic’s Fortnite, but every game has its peak. Have you tried the game’s Battle Royale mode? Or better yet, have any of you given the paid Save the World game mode a go?
