Elite: Dangerous is coming to SteamVR and HTC Vive this year

Later on in the year, HTC and Valve will be releasing a small number of Vive virtual reality headsets for purchase, before a larger launch next year. One of the first games headset buyers will be able to play is Elite: Dangerous, which is getting an update for SteamVR compatibility later this year.

Elite: Dangerous has been playable on the Oculus Rift for a while now, so potential buyers already have a good idea of what to expect. The update to SteamVR will come in the form of a free update later on in the year.

Frontier's PR rep, Michael Gapper, revealed the new update over on Twitter, saying: “Happy to announce Elite Dangerous is coming to SteamVR and HTC Vive with a free update later this year”. Unfortunately there is no exact date but I would speculate that it will roughly coincide with the Vive's mini-launch later this year.

Elite: Dangerous initially launched last Winter to positive reception. The game has also launched in early access on the Xbox One, with a final release date set for October, with a simplified control scheme to make the game play better without a flight stick.

KitGuru Says: I've been meaning to play more Elite: Dangerous myself. I imagine the game would be pretty fun with virtual reality implemented. Do any of you play Elite: Dangerous? Are you thinking about picking up a VR headset when they become more available?
