Earlier this week, Microsoft announced that it would be opening up Xbox Live to allow developers to implement cross-platform multiplayer on certain games. While Fable Legends was originally set to be the first game to show off this feature, that game has now been cancelled, so Rocket League will be taking up the mantle instead.
Soon, Rocket League will allow Xbox One players to also play with those on the PC side. Sony also has PS4 to PC cross-play on certain titles, like Rocket League. However, the surprising thing here is that Microsoft is also opening up Xbox Live for cross-platform multiplayer with PlayStation and it turns out that Sony is also open to the idea.
In a statement sent to GameSpot when asked about cross-platform play, Sony said: “We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross-platform play.”
Now that doesn't guarantee that the next big multiplayer game will see Xbox One gamers face off against PS4 gamers but Sony appears to be open to the idea of discussing cross-platform options with developers.
KitGuru Says: Since most console games play at the same resolution and frame rate, specifically multiplayer focused titles, it would be great to see cross-platform play between Microsoft and Sony's consoles. Neither console would have any real advantage in terms of performance or controllers and the player base would expand greatly.
