Cross-buy and universal apps coming to Xbox One and PC

Microsoft had another presentation today, this time at the Game Developers Conference, revealing some more on its plans for the future of Xbox and PC gaming. One of the bigger announcements to come out was cross-buy support for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC titles.

Phil Spencer took to the stage and said that cross-buy would be implemented on Microsoft's own store, allowing gamers to buy the same game for two platforms at once. This is pretty similar to what Sony has done with its PlayStation and PS Vita consoles.

The option won't be mandatory, meaning that game developers and publishers could opt out if they want their customers to have to buy the game more than once. However, this should still offer better value for those who game on both a PC and an Xbox One. This system can be used for DLC too, so season passes could theoretically carry over between the Xbox One and PC.

This is all part of Microsoft's attempt to unify its platforms with Windows 10. Aside from this, there will be a new API for developers, allowing them to create games and applications that will run on all Windows 10 devices, including Xbox, PC and even the Holo Lens.

KitGuru Says: Cross-buy between Xbox One and PC could be a very good thing. Unfortunately by the sounds of it, this feature won't include Steam, which will be a deal breaker for some.
