Live service games are all the rage nowadays, with many studios vying to have a hit which could last for a decade or more. One game which is well on its way to this milestone is Sea of Thieves. First released 5 years ago back in 2018, the team at Rare have now mapped out the next 5 years of Sea of Thieves.
Sea of Thieves has been celebrating its 5th anniversary, with the team at Rare recently releasing a documentary on the game’s creation called ‘Voyage of a Lifetime’. Alongside the documentary, Microsoft published a post on the Xbox blog detailing the development trials and tribulations of the live service title.
While an interesting read in its own right, the conclusion of the post saw Rare tease that Sea of Thieves’ journey has only just begun, having mapped out the next 5 years – with the game’s director Mike Chapman saying:
“I think 10 years of Sea of Thieves will feel like a long time – but also, we’ll blink and be there. And I still think we’ll have unfinished business when we get to that point.”
The concept of Sea of Thieves lends itself to a great deal of potential and so it is unlikely that the team at Rare will run out of things to add to the game. It will be interesting to see what exactly they have planned for the next half-decade.
