NZXT Avatar S Gaming Mouse Review

The Avatar S gaming mouse can be purchased with either black or white as the main color scheme.  We will be testing the model that is white with black accenting today and if first impressions count for anything NZXT might just have a winner here.

The contrast between the two colors works very well making the Avatar S an eye grabber.

The body of the Avatar S offers a very sleek design and weighs considerably less then many gaming mice we have used in the past.  On both sides of the Avatar S there is a molded area to rest the thumb, depending on which hand orientation we have the mouse set up for. Each side has a single programmable button and in the default configuration they function as forward and back buttons, when browsing the web.

The top of the Avatar S is a very simplistic design made up of nothing other then the left and right buttons and a scroll wheel. The scroll wheel also functions as a programmable button.  The base of the Avatar S features 1600 DPI laser optics and has three raised areas that are Teflon coated to allow the mouse to glide on pretty much any type of surface.

The Avatar S has a very light weight cable and uses gold plating on the USB connector.

Here are two shots comparing the original Avatar to the new Avatar S. As we can see there is very little difference in the design.  The Avatar S does not have the two buttons behind the scroll wheel and the body is lighter than the original Avatar.

  1. Looks like a fairly average mouse with a pretty shell. They have too much competition from microsoft, razer etc.

  2. These need weight systems. thats all they need to add. maybe make a deluxe version of it…. ?

  3. Looks fantastic, but im happy with my MX518, the best mouse ever IMO

  4. I like the looks a lot and people need to realise that its much cheaper than many of the high end gaming mice.

I mean look at Razer, you could basically buy a CPU for the price of one of their high end mice today

  5. Yeah, Razer mice are a bit expensive, but, trust me – they’re perfect for that amount of $.

  6. if the body had some weight to it I would have liked it more but it’s not a bad mouse for the price

  7. “Mouse body needs more weight.”

Whether this is a con is highly subjective and shouldn’t be included as one in a review striving to be objective. If I could, I would have as light a mouse as materially possible while still being robust. The closest I’ve come to is MS Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1. It’s very light and it’s the best mouse I’ve used so far, despite lack of high polling rate, high DPI and side buttons.

NZXT Avatar S looks like worthy mouse if it is well built and the sensor is reliable. I didn’t notice the review say whether the mouse has any prediction / angle snapping. Angle snapping straightens the direction of the sensor output in fast movements and while it may be useful in photo editing and such, it will decrease the accuracy of your mouse movement in FPS games.

The remaining question, for me, is whether the mouse is comfortable. It looks comfortable as it has vertical sides which make it easy to lift, but I’d still have to test it to know better…
