Meta may reduce Quest 3 price by offering the headset without controllers

The Meta Quest 3 has officially launched, bringing with it upgraded hardware for running VR games as well as an upgraded display, sensors and a new design that greatly improves ergonomics. At launch, the Quest 3 is priced at $499 but a cheaper bundle is already being planned.

Bloomberg reports that Meta is already looking at ways to reduce the Quest 3's cost to improve adoption and sales. One method under consideration is by offering a bundle without the Touch controllers in an effort to get the cost down closer to the Quest 2's $299 price tag.

Such a bundle could work out well, as the Quest headset does offer hand-tracking, allowing users to interact with VR without a controller, although having the additional hardware may be required to play some games or use certain software.

That's not all we can expect out of Meta in 2024 though. The company is also working on another headset, although this one is billed as a “mixed reality” device with cheaper components to keep costs low. This could well be Meta's return to the budget headset market, one that it left behind years ago with the cancellation of the Oculus Go.

KitGuru Says: The $299 price point for the Quest 2 was huge, enabling millions to go out and pick up a headset for the first time. At $499, the Quest 3 is a tougher sell but hopefully prices will come down in the year ahead.
