Next NRS game will reportedly release in 2023 and be the longest-supported title yet

Recently we reported that Ed Boon, the founder of NetherRealm Studios, revealed that the developer’s much-anticipated next game was not going to be at The Game Awards. The show came and went, and indeed there was no NRS news. That being said, according to Boon himself, the next title by the studio is planned for release in 2023 – and will be their longest-supported title so far.

Ed Boon is an active Twitter user, and is much more transparent and open with fans than most with him consistently responding to questions online. As part of his latest AMA (ask me anything), Boon revealed that 2023 will be NRS’ big year, where in response to one fan who asked “can we expect a revel (sic) for your next game soon (by soon i mean the next 6 months),” to which Boon simply responded “Likely.”

That is not all however, as an/other fan asked him “Can we get a release window for the next project?” to which Boon cheekily replied with “I really shouldn’t 23-answer that” – confirming that assuming no complications arise, NRS fans will likely be playing their upcoming game by this time next year at the latest.

NRS have in the past seen quite a quick turnaround with their games, releasing a new title every other year. Mortal Kombat 11 has now been out for over 3 years with no new game in sight, but this seems to be all in service of longer-term support, with Boon responding to one fan’s question about MK11, saying:

“MK11 support was the longest we supported a game. Next game should be even longer”. While we do not yet know what game NRS is working on, Boon previously claimed that it will either be Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12. Fortunately, we will find out within the next 6 months.
