NieR: Automata has sold over 7 million copies

NieR: Automata started its life as a pseudo-sequel to a highly niche Japanese title from an equally niche-yet-unique creator ‘Yoko Taro’. In the years since its 2017 release, the Action-JRPG has gone on to see a surprisingly high amount of commercial success – with the team now revealing that Automata has sold over 7 million copies.

Square Enix recently hosted a Nier: Automata Fan Festival where following its conclusion, the team revealed that since its release in early 2017, NieR: Automata has sold over 7 million copies.

Automata has had an interesting life, with the game initially releasing exclusively on PS4 and PC. Following its surprising success however, the game was brought over to Xbox consoles – with a PC patch eventually being released to fix long-standing issues.

Finally, NieR: Automata most recently was ported to the Nintendo Switch, which likely helped to push the game to 7 million units. This now makes Automata one of the best-selling Square Enix games ever released, with it having surpassed the likes of Kingdom Hearts III, and has even outsold many mainline Final Fantasy titles.

With it being almost 6 years since the launch of Automata, hopefully the team is gearing up for a new game announcement anytime soon.
