Windows 8 market share 2%: Windows 7 45%

Microsoft Windows 8 has not met with the most successful launch for the company and according to data released by analytics firm Net Applications the market share is still very low.

According to the new figures released, Windows 8 only has 2.26 percent of the desktop operating systems market. Windows 7 by comparison is holding 44.5 percent of the market.

The news is not all bad for Microsoft because figures would indicate that Windows 8 is slowly gaining market share every month while Windows 7 is slowly dropping.

How did Windows 7 do at launch? Well in the same time period after Windows 7 launch the operating system had gathered 7.7 percent of the market.

Analysing the data, we can work out that Windows 8 has sold about 60 million licenses, approximately. The PC market in general is sluggish in regards to sales, with many experts blaming the rise in tablet and smartphone sales.

Macintosh OSX accounts for 6.4 percent of the market, which is higher than the 5.24 percent from Vista.

Kitguru says: Windows 8 still has some way to go, but we can't help but feel the dramatic interface changes are alienating a large portion of the desktop user base.
