VESA, the Video Electronics Standards Association, is introducing new quality standards to represent display motion clarity and HDR experiences better. The organisation has announced revisions to its ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black standards, introducing new performance tiers to cater to the latest advancements in display technology. These updates will be showcased at CES 2025 in Las Vegas next week.

VESA's ClearMR standard, launched in 2022, provides a metric for evaluating motion blur in displays. The Clear Motion Ratio (CMR) offers a numerical value based on the clear-to-blurry pixels ratio to compare displays easily. The latest update introduces three new performance tiers: ClearMR 15000, ClearMR 18000, and ClearMR 21000. These tiers are designed to validate and ensure exceptional motion clarity in the most advanced displays, including those with 480 Hz and higher refresh rates.

VESA's DisplayHDR True Black standard is the industry's first fully open standard for HDR quality on emissive displays like OLEDs. The standard ensures HDR content is displayed with vibrant colours, accurate contrast, and deep black levels. The latest update introduces a new luminance performance tier named DisplayHDR True Black 1000. This tier validates new OLED displays with the same deep blacks as other True Black tiers but at higher brightness levels.
