Nvidia reportedly plans to relaunch RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory this month

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 is set for a fresh debut, distinguishing itself from its predecessor, which entered the market 16 months ago. This upcoming release will feature a new SKU equipped with GDDR6 RAM running at 20Gbps.

Reports from Board Channels (via VideoCardz) suggest that the new RTX 4070 may see a 5% drop in bandwidth due to the switch from GDDR6X to GDDR6 memory. Still, its overall performance is expected to remain comparable. Not all applications rely heavily on memory, and other factors such as CUDA core count, TDP, and clock rates will likely remain unchanged.

Board Channels indicate that the “downgraded” RTX 4070 with its new GDDR6 memory configuration is expected to become available around August 20th. However, this date may not signify an official release but rather an approximate schedule for its arrival in stores. As for pricing, it's unclear if it will be adjusted for the new model.

With the new RTX 4070 model possibly replacing the current one, Nvidia and board partners should make clear to customers which cards they're picking. One obvious solution would be adding the “GDDR6” nomenclature to change the product name. Another solution would be to state the type of memory it uses on the product box.
