Outward did huge numbers when it first debuted on Steam several years ago. Now, Outward 2 is on the way, but fans expecting to pick the game up in July as previously announced will be disappointed.
Just weeks before the July 2026 launch window, Nine Dots Studio has announced that it is delaying Outward 2. The game will now release sometime in 2027. Speaking on the delay, creative director, Guillaume Boucher-Vidal said “I apologise that we couldn't give you the game you guys deserve on time”.
We don't know exactly why the game was delayed at the last minute, as an open beta had just taken place in June. However, the following quote may contain some answers: “It’s hard to gauge what is the appropriate degree of stability expected for early access. The best we can do is take a hard, honest look at the game, and at our team, and ask: in a few weeks, will this be good enough to charge money for?”
With that quote in mind, it seems that the studio didn't want early access day-one players to be faced with too many bugs, crashes or other issues. Outward 2 will still be an early access title, but the delay should mean that it has a considerable layer of polish on it when it does arrive.
